What is it about?

We know what makes brands grow. Figuring that out has been Interbrand’s business for decades, and after 16 years of publishing Best Global Brands, we knew we had to create a platform for celebrating the new, notable brands that were increasingly inspiring the world’s biggest and best.

The Interbrand Breakthrough Brands report highlights the emerging brands that are still on the cusp of global status, but that will nonetheless define significant shifts in the marketplace. We will be celebrating brands from across the globe that help us understand:

  • Developments in innovation, changes in consumer demand, or even socio-economic progress. They serve to illustrate how these forces are forming and shaping the future.
  • Nascent technologies, ideas, models, and platforms that highlight meaningful change. They serve as inspiration for established brands and entrepreneurs alike.
  • The report will not be a ranking or a list. It will spotlight where we’re heading, and the brand leaders and innovators who’ll get us there.

What makes a Breakthrough Brand?

Interbrand Breakthrough Brands are the next generation of brands. They are small but growing, putting innovation to action and creating or thinking in a way that is radically different from received wisdom or the status quo. These brands may not be household names—but soon some of them will be.

To qualify for the report, brands must:

  • Be less than ten years old
  • Be changing or impacting a category with new thinking
  • Present a unique business model, one that challenges the traditional way of doing things
  • Tap into consumer behaviors in an entirely new and unexpected way
  • Be developing a new technology, product, or service that people didn’t realize they really needed and wanted
  • Be growing quickly, with rapid rate of adoption
  • Understand the value of brand, and manage it well

And are:

  • Anywhere in the world, particularly in emerging markets, and may not have a global footprint
  • Not necessarily a technology brand
